What Actually Happens During a Professional Car Detail? A Step-by-Step Look Inside Our Buford Shop
You know your vehicle needs more than a quick rinse at the drive-through car wash. Maybe you have noticed the dull film building up on the paint or the dust packed into every dashboard vent and cup holder. But you have never booked a professional car detail before, and you are not sure what to expect when you drop your car off.
We hear that a lot at our Buford, GA shop. So here is a straightforward look at the full car detailing process we follow at Marine Klean & Auto Klean, from the moment your vehicle rolls in to the moment you pick it up looking (and smelling) like it just left the showroom floor.
It Starts Before You Even Arrive
Before any soap or polish touches your vehicle, our team does a full walkaround assessment. We look at the current condition of the paint, check for areas of heavy contamination like bug splatter or tree sap, inspect the interior fabric and leather surfaces, and take note of anything that needs extra attention. This step helps us recommend the right detailing package for what your vehicle actually needs, rather than overselling you on services that would not make a difference.
If getting to our shop during regular hours does not work with your schedule, we offer after-hours pickup and drop-off so you can still get your vehicle detailed without rearranging your day.
The Exterior: More Than Just a Wash
A professional exterior detail is where the biggest visual transformation happens, and it is nothing like what you get at an automated car wash.
Two-bucket hand wash. We start with a two-bucket hand-wash method. One bucket holds the clean soapy water, and the other is used for rinsing the wash mitt. This keeps dirty water and grit off the paint, which is the number one cause of those fine swirl marks you see when sunlight hits your car at certain angles.
Wheels and tires Your wheels and tires are hand-washed separately. Brake dust, road grime, and tar get packed into every spoke and lug nut recess, and that buildup can actually damage the wheel finish over time if left untreated.
Paint decontamination. Once the vehicle is clean, we decontaminate the paint surface to remove bonded contaminants like bugs, tar, and embedded road grime that washing alone cannot touch. For vehicles that need deeper work, our Level 2 exterior package includes a clay-bar treatment. This strips away microscopic particles stuck to the clear coat, leaving the surface completely smooth and ready for polishing or protection.
Machine polishing. If your paint has swirl marks, light scratches, or oxidation, a swirl-free single-stage machine polish brings back the gloss and clarity. For more severe paint issues, we also offer dedicated paint correction and polishing services that can address deeper defects.
Protection. We finish the exterior by applying a durable paint sealant, trim dressing to refresh exterior plastics and rubber, and a no-sling tire dressing that stays on the tire without flinging onto your fender the next time you drive. If you are looking for longer-lasting protection, our Level 2 exterior package includes the option to upgrade to a 3-year or 5-year ceramic coating instead of a standard sealant.
The Interior: Where You Actually Spend Your Time
Most people think of car detailing as something that happens to the outside of the vehicle. But the interior is where you sit, breathe, and spend hours of your week. A thorough interior detail makes a noticeable difference in how your vehicle feels on every drive.
Vacuuming. We start by vacuuming the floors, seats, trunk area, and every crevice where crumbs, dirt, and debris collect. This includes under the seats and along the seat tracks, where a standard vacuum at home usually cannot reach.
Surface cleaning. We clean the console, cup holders, air vents, and all of the small crevices throughout the cabin by hand. These are the areas where dust and allergens build up over time, and they are easy to overlook when you are cleaning your car.
Seats. For cloth seats, we vacuum and (in our Level 2 package) shampoo the fabric to pull out stains and odors. Leather seats are wiped down, and in deeper detail, they are cleaned and conditioned to keep the leather soft and prevent cracking from Georgia's heat and UV exposure.
Glass. All glass is cleaned inside and out. Interior glass tends to develop a hazy film from off-gassing plastics and everyday use, and cleaning it properly makes a real difference in visibility, especially at night.
The details that make it a detail. Our Level 2 interior package goes further with cleaning the headliner, shampooing all carpeting in the cabin and trunk, applying UV protection to the dash, and treating all interior trim and leather with a protective finish. Door panels and pockets are cleaned and conditioned. By the time we finish, the interior is not just clean; it is protected.
Add-On Services Worth Knowing About
Beyond our core interior and exterior packages, we offer a few targeted add-on services that address specific areas:
Headlight restoration starts at $50 per headlight. If your headlights have turned hazy or yellow, this service clears them up and includes a ceramic coating to keep them from clouding again.
Engine bay detailing starts at $85. We remove grease, grime, and road film from the engine bay and engine components. It is something most people overlook, but a clean engine bay makes it easier to spot leaks or maintenance issues down the road.
How We Protect Vehicles Beyond Detailing
Professional car detailing is a great way to restore and maintain your vehicle's appearance. But if you want to keep it looking that way for the long term with less maintenance, we also offer additional protection services at our Buford shop:
XPEL paint protection film shields your paint from rock chips, road debris, and minor abrasion. Window tinting helps reduce heat and UV exposure inside the cabin. And our Gtechniq ceramic coatings create a durable, hydrophobic layer that makes washing easier and keeps your paint looking glossy between details.
You can see real results from our work in our before-and-after gallery.
What Sets a Professional Detail Apart from a DIY Wash
The most significant difference is not just the products or tools. It is the process. Every step in a professional auto detailing process builds on the one before it. Washing prepares the surface for decontamination. Decontamination prepares it for polishing. Polishing prepares it for protection. Skip a step or do them out of order, and the results will not hold up.
Our team at Marine Klean & Auto Klean has been doing this work since 2011. We are IDA Certified Detailers and Gtechniq accredited, which means our team has been trained and tested on the proper techniques and products to handle any vehicle that comes through our doors.
Your Vehicle Deserves More Than a Drive-Through Wash
Think about the last time you sat in your car and everything felt fresh. The seats were clean, the dash was dust-free, and the paint had an actual shine to it. That is what you drive away with after a detail at our shop.
